Panaghoy sa Suba MoviePanaghoy sa Suba Movie (The Call of the River) stars Cesar Montano, who is also the producer and director of the said film. Produced by CM Films and story and concept by Cesar himself, this Cesar Montano film earned 35 major awards nominations and won 20 of them. This includes Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director awards for Cesar Montano at the 2005 Gawad Urian Awards.

Panaghoy sa Suba Movie Plot Summary

The movie is set up in 1942 in Bohol, Central Visayas region during World War II, before and during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, and is in Visayan language but with English subtitles. Cesar Montano plays Duroy, a boatman at Loboc River and the eldest son of Miri (Daria Ramirez). He has two younger siblings Ibo (Reiven Bulado) and Bikay (Rebecca Lusterio) and his father has already abandoned them.

On the other hand, Juliana Palermo plays Iset, a beautiful young woman working at a Nipa business owned by abusive American John Smith (Philip Anthony). Her father and Aunt Lahi (Caridad Sanchez) wanted her to marry him to escape poverty, but Iset does not like him. Duroy likes Iset a lot but he stopped courting her when he learned that Ibo also likes her. Shortly, Miri dies of sickness because they have not enough money for her medicine.

One day, Ibo fought back against Smith but the latter was able to kill him. To get revenge, Duroy planned to kill Smith but the latter returned to the US, as the Japanese army starts to invade the Philippines. Their barrio was conquered by the Japanese soldiers led by Fumio Ohkohara (Jacky Woo) and Duroy decided to join the guerrilla movement and flee to the mountains. After the war, Smith returned to the Philippines and Duroy attempted to kill him.
